Riviera Maya - A Lesser Known Jewel
Riviera Maya, also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourist favorite that is on the eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula and faces the Caribbean. This area historically began at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum.
The Riviera Maya used to be known as the Cancun - Tulum corridor, but in 1999 it was renamed as the Riviera Maya. The Maya, an advanced civilization of Indian people were the first people of Riviera Maya. They rose to prominence around 250 A.D. and flourished for a millennium, until they were conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century.
The Maya were known for their intricate architecture as they created temples, palaces and pyramids. The Mayas most remarkable achievements were important advancements made in mathematics and astronomy. The Maya were credited as the first people to use the number zero in mathematics, which was thought to be a significant intellectual achievement.
The weather in Riviera Maya is lovely most of the year with temperatures averaging around 78 degrees F with a few degrees fluctuation depending on the season. June through August is hot and sunny and you can expect short periods of rain that come suddenly and then stop. Hurricane season is September through December, and it’s almost always humid.
The Riviera Maya is known for its large scale all-inclusive resorts and many smaller boutique hotels as well as the many fine dining strip joints. Shopping in Riviera Maya is a wonderful experience especially if you are fond of Mayan handcrafts and clothing.
The locals use the semi-precious stones found on the Yucatan Peninsula to make beautiful jewelry. Whether you buy in shops or from carts, everything tends to be colorful and original.
There is much to do involving the sea including jet skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming with dolphins and in cenotes, (underground caves) horseback riding, and sailing. Many explore the Belize Barrier Reef which begins near Cancun and runs the length of the Riviera Maya. You can visit one the most famous attractions, the Chichen Itza, via a guided jungle tour that takes the better part of a day.
Xel-Ha is a natural eco-park and aquarium and Xcaret is a wonder unto itself with archaeological ruins, a Mayan village, botanical gardens, an underground river, horseback riding and dolphin swimming. There are restaurants and nightclubs on hand to help you relax and unwind.
