Cozumel - A Mayan Jewel
Cozumel is short for San Miguel Cozumel, the city’s full name and in Mayan means Land of the Swallows. Ancient Mayans settled the area some 2,000 years ago and considered it both a trading stop and a shrine. It is well known for its beaches and it appears that reputation is well deserved. At Sunset Beach, undoubtedly named for the view when the sun goes down, there is extraordinary SNUBA diving, a combination of scuba and snorkeling.
A teacher instructs you before you go underwater where it is said that Cozumel’s true beauty lies. In about a 30 minute dive, without all the heavy equipment you use for scuba, you can enjoy the mysteries of the not-so-deep. In fact, most people think that if you haven’t been below the water in Cozumel, you haven’t really experienced it.
Chakanaab National Marine Park is a conservation area to protect the marine and plant life around the coral reefs in Cozumel. It is also where you can swim with the dolphins or even snorkel with them, providing a truly memorable part of your vacation. Horseback riding is a main recreational event in Cozumel and you can participate in any number of tours that focus on different areas.
There are thick jungle areas in Cozumel that have trails for horseback riding as well as savannas which are just as beautiful with a less dense landscape. One of these tours offers swimming in a cenote (a fresh water lake) after the ride, an unusual feature you’re not likely to find elsewhere.
Passion Island is one of the spectacular parts of Cozumel island which should not be missed. Apart from the incredibly beautiful wildlife sanctuary located there, adventurous hiking trails abound. Hidden rivers and stunning flora and fauna are unseen by the masses, pure and pristine.
Passion Island is fraught with Mayan legends and the mysticism surrounding them. One of the best known Mayan ruins on the Yucatan can be found in Chichen Itza. Old archaeological finds are interesting and plentiful in this part of Cozumel and a great tourist attraction.
A popular way to tour Cozumel is by horse-drawn carriage, a mode of transportation quite familiar to Mexicans. The carriage can take you to various points of interest within the city, or you can customize your own tour and have it take you to where you want to go via the most scenic route possible.
