Huatulco - Where It Is and What to Do
Huatulco is located 270 miles southeast of Acapulco in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Las Bahia de Huatulco includes nine different bays, with 36 gorgeous beaches among them. Legend has it that the Toltecs and Quetza Coatl were some of the people that passed thru Huatulco.
After the Spanish Conquest, Huatulco thrived as a port and distribution center for supplies on the Pacific Coast. Like much of the surrounding area, Huatulco was subjected to pirate attacks. Until resorts began to be built in the 1980’s, Huatulco was primarily known as a coffee growing region.
In 1984, Fonatur, a government agency, acquired land to develop a tourism center like the one in Cancun. Huatulco has a small town, home feel to it and is rarely crowded with tourists, except during Christmas and Holy Week.
There are roughly 330 days a year of sunshine in Huatulco with the temperatures ranging from 73 to 85 degrees F, depending on the season. The rainy season runs from June to November but the showers and thunderstorms tend to be brief.
There are many water-based recreational activities to try out in Huatulco, including fishing, snorkeling and diving. Playa San Augustin is perfect for diving and there are wonderful seafood restaurants on the beach there. A great diving site is El Naufragio, a fifty year old shipwreck. Magic Falls is an incredible waterfall frequented by tourists and Buceo Sotavento boasts a zoo, aquarium and park.
Nightlife is in short supply in Huatulco compared to some other Mexican resort towns. The Tipsy Blowfish, owned by a family from Houston, is a lively bar/club playing 70’s and ‘80’s music. The Blvd. Nightclub is a tourist favorite with good DJ’s and salsa dancing. Café Dublin, true to its name is an Irish pub where drinks and music go hand and hand. Bar La Crema is one of the current hot spots with lounge-like ambience and a mixed bag of tunes. La Iguana plays rock music and televises sporting events.
Huatulco does have its share of good restaurants. L’Echalote offers French/Asian cuisine, Dona Celia, Los Portales and La Crucecita are all Mexican, El Giardino del Papa and Il Rigoletto prepare good Italian. Kristal Rose and Grillo Marinero serve up good seafood and lobster. Café Oasis is a fine steakhouse. For Chinese, try the Rollo Chino. For traditional Oaxacan cuisine and native dishes, Sabor de Oxaca is the place to go.
