Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo is located southwest of Mexico City, in the state of Guerrero in an area which is part of the Mexican Riviera. The two cities so closely linked by name are only 6 miles apart from each other. The weather, as you’d expect, is spectacular most of the year and these twin cities get about 300 days of sunshine a year. The climate is tropical with temperatures averaging form 73 to 93 degrees F. Even during the rainy season from June to September, the days are sunny. The rains are considerate enough to wait until evening so they don’t interfere with your fun in the sun.
There are over 240 restaurants in Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and the following have reached Top Ten status: From last to first, Villa de la Selva, Tamales y Atoles Any, Nueva Zelanda, La Perla, Kua-Kan, Il Mare, El Galeon, Coconuts, Casa Morelos and Beccofino. For a lush and romantic evening with your sweetie, Amuleto is the place to eat.
Enjoy gourmet dining outdoors, overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay, as the stars look on. The Zihua Blue Restaurant and Grill gives you a two-fer: two restaurants with totally different cuisines (French/Thai and Mexican). Also overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay, it’s a romantic place for dinner.
There’s no shortage of music and merriment in Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo as music is played and enjoyed in many of the local restaurants, pubs and bars. Nightlife in terms of actual clubs is a bit more limited.
There are many discotheques in Ixtapa with Christine Club Ixtapa one of the most popular. Sanca, at the lovely Barcelo Beach Resort in Ixtapa is a great choice for dancing and Bandido’s is THE place to be on Zihuatanejo. If you’re a scuba aficionado, Ixtapa was made for you, with 30 different dive sites for you to choose from.
Snorkeling is also a favorite with tourists and the best places to do it are Playa Las Gatas and Playa Manzanilla. Sports fishing is also a favorite with massive sailfish, and blue and black marlin the “catch of the day” for tourists and residents alike.
While in Ixtapa, take your children to Magic World, a wonderful aquatic recreation park that includes all the usual water rides as well as a pirate ship. If a walk is more your speed, don’t miss the Parc Aventura, also in Ixtapa. Walk through the trees amid hanging bridges, ziplines and foot bridges and enjoy the lovely surroundings.
